KAA Guest Artist
Peru High School Art Students
Kokomo Art Association is pleased to announce the opening a new art exhibit that will feature the original works of some 18 Peru High School artists and their teacher, Mike Applegate. The inspirational show opens at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4 and runs through Oct. 25 at Artworks Gallery, 210 N. Main Street, in Kokomo.
Cheryl Sullivan Kokomo Art Association President, said the student exhibit aligns well with the Kokomo Art Association’s mission of bringing art to the community and bringing the community to art. The students will showcase and sell a variety of paintings, drawings, mixed media, sculpture and ceramics.
“Mr. Applegate has been instrumental in helping young people tap into their creativity. He and his students have painted various murals around town, such as the circus building, underpass, circus band building, and the YMCA. We’re honored to share our gallery space with young emerging artists and help them learn what it takes to show and sell their work professionally,” Sullivan.
Mike Applegate has been a high school teacher for the past 34 years and adjunct drawing professor at IU Kokomo for the past 12 years. In addition, he is a board member of the IU Kokomo Art Gallery, G. David Thompson Art Advisory Board amongst other impressive experiences on boards and organizations.
When he first started teaching at Peru High School, there were only 24 students for the entire school year. Within two years, he built the program to 630 students and the necessity to hire a second full time art teacher.
“We are grateful for this opportunity to partner with the Kokomo Art Association,” Applegate said. “My students often hear me share my favorite quote from Scott Adams, which is ‘Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes; Art is knowing which ones to keep.’ Now our students will have a rare chance to showcase and sell their work in a professional gallery setting. They are learning valuable lessons about how to market their art, which will help them long after they graduate.”
One of Mr. Applegate’s favorite quotes reads: Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep. by Scott Adams
